The Courageous Entrepreneur Show Episode Notes

As we move through our lives we develop an ongoing monologue…a story that we tell ourselves as we move through our day and through our lives.

This story is built on beliefs we’ve picked up from others in our lives and that we’ve created as we try to make sense of what we go through.

As you’ll discover in this episode, what we tell ourselves …our story…either sets us up for achievement or for struggle.

It’s up to us to recognize the story for what it is – a story – and choose what we’ll focus on and what we’ll let go of.

My great friend and colleague, the brilliant Jeff Rock of Swift River Coaching dot com helps us make sense of all this and begin the process of letting go what no longer serves us and amplify what does.

He’s a career coach, brand story teller, and certified personal branding strategist. Jeff’s work helps professionals uncover, embrace, and make sense of their past to leverage it so it supports their career growth, transition to a new career, or to new business success.

He’s worked with survivors of toxic workplace environments as well as entrepreneurs forging new paths. His 25+ years of corporate experience combined with his unique ability to see your potential, mine your past skills and accomplishments, and break free from the negative aspects of your story enable him to coach and support you as you transition to create life and work that brings you joy and is true to your essence. I can tell you that working with Jeff gave me permission to follow my calling and to be who I truly am. I love Jeff and his work.

So listen in as Jeff shares:

  • What exactly story is and how it impacts goal achievement and success
  • Where our story comes from
  • What influences the story we tell ourselves as we age and navigate through the world
  • Tips to help us begin to recognize the story we have and that it needs to change
  • How to decide what stories to share, who to share them with, and what to just let go of

As always, listen all the way through and I’ll share your reflection exercise and action step for this episode.

There’s a saying that self-employment is the most powerful and most expensive self-improvement program you’ll ever go through. The reason is you come face to face with your own crap.

Suddenly problems and issues you never knew you had bubble to the surface and actively work to hold you back.

People who were former executives making multi-six figures with more degrees and certifications than a thermometer and with accomplishments that make others go WOW suddenly believe their stupid and not good enough.

I once talked to an eye doctor who told me she was stupid – because she didn’t know what to say on her website.

How could she know how to write copy for a website? It’s not like she’s a marketing expert.

I’ll bet you tell yourself stories similar to that.

Maybe it’s “I can’t charge that amount” or “no one will work with me” or “I’m just not good enough”.

We’ve all got things we say to ourselves that we truly believe and that end up keeping us trapped right where we are.

I’ve got lots of stories I tell myself too.

Well what if you could suddenly become the courageous action-taker you dream of? What if the past hurts and indignities you’ve experienced no longer had a hold over you?

Today’s episode is going to challenge you to really listen to and confront your thoughts.

Grace Bell of Work With Grace spent decades believing there was something wrong with her…that there was something missing that she needed to find and get….

And while eventually she became a trained mental health counselor with a husband and two small children, an unexpected divorce left her with the realization she suddenly needed a full time income to keep her house and care for her kids.

You’ll hear her story and how she managed to build a profitable, thriving practice and now helps others move past their fears, doubts, and disempowering beliefs using something called The Work.

This episode will:

  • challenge you to confront your own beliefs and how those beliefs may be holding you back
  • reveal the 4 questions to ask to confront those beliefs
  • and demonstrate a mini session of The Work

Hopefully you’ll be inspired to let go of the disempowering thoughts that can control you and leave you trapped in emotions that don’t serve you and help you break free to create the abundant life you want and deserve.

As always stay with us til the end and I’ll share your reflection exercise and action step for this episode.

What you’re going to hear is the audio recording of a video interview.

When I started the show it was a live interview show on the Facebook Live platform. It didn’t take me long to decide to start doing recorded interviews. One reason I made that decision is because the technology is unreliable unless you’ve got top of the line broadband and hardware. So is you’re going to hear some points where it sounds like the word or words dropped, you’ll hear some delays and talking over each other at points and that’s because of the delay on the livestream platform I used. I hope you’ll excuse that because there’s great information in this episode.

If you’ve ever felt that you just couldn’t go on and questioned if it would really be possible for you to grow a business using your gifts then I think you’ll find the episode inspiring and informative.

It’s so easy to look at someone’s success and think that it came easily to them or that they have some secret solution that you don’t.

But we each face our own challenges to reach our goal and often those challenges can be a combination of physical and emotional or mindset. Sometimes it’s our mindset that leads us to physically be unable to move forward and sometimes it’s both.

Listen in as my guest Maryam Webster shares…

  • How she went from a busy job as a sociologist with a growing therapy practice to paralyzed car accident victim and back to thriving business coach.
  • Her response to the doctors who told her she’d never walk again
  • The one person who provided the emotional support she needed
  • What her friends, family, and even her husband told her about her focus on recovery and walking again.
  • How she built her coaching practice while she was still extremely limited in her mobility
  • And the lessons she learned as a result of going through what she went through.

Listen in all the way to the end where I’ll share you reflection exercise and action step for this episode.

There are a lot of “shoulds” and “must do’s” according to gurus and they all have their take on the answer to your problems. Few are genuinely able to help you leverage what works and build a thriving business around that in the way that today’s expert can.

In today’s episode you’ll hear from former Wall Street Journal columnist and multi-best selling author Mike Michalowicz.

Mike came across his knowledge the hard way – by 35 he had started and sold two multi-million dollar companies. Confident he had the formula for success he became an angel investor and proceeded to lose his entire fortune.

He regularly talks about how although he ran an outwardly successful company he actually lived check to check until he realized how to manage his business revenue and put profit first.

His mission now is to eradicate entrepreneurial poverty.

He’s the four time best selling author of Surge, Profit First, the Pumpkin Plan, and the book that Business Week deemed “the entrepreneur’s cult classic,” The Toiletpaper Entrepreneur.

This isn’t as much of an interview as it is a workshop as Mike shares incredible insight into growing a profitable business built on your strengths.

You’re going to hear…
• The single biggest thing an entrepreneur needs to do to lay a foundation for real profitability.
• How our behavior patterns of the past can keep us trapped where we are or worse set us back to where we don’t want to be
• The big mistake we make when trying to course correct that actually makes things worse, not better
• Two ways to scale your business and tips for choosing which is right for you
• Why building on your strengths and hiring to manage your weaknesses is a key to success
• The simple 3 part rule that helps you put a problem in perspective so you can decide on the best course of action
• Why a “rally cry” is critical for your business and how it can work to attract the right clients and partners and how to create yours
• The benefits of being a true recognized expert in your field.

Each of us goes through a variety of challenges as we move through our lives from childhood through adulthood.

Those challenges leave us with emotional and psychological wounds that can vary from superficial scratches to deep cuts.

How we respond to those situations is unique to each of us; and what one person may feel is not a big deal, another person may experience as profoundly wounding.

Over time, an accumulation of small wounds that are unaddressed could result in a deep emotional injury.

Often without our even realizing it.

And the strategies we adopt to deal with the slings and arrows of life as well as with circumstances that are profoundly hurtful — like losing a job, getting divorced, being the victim of a crime, chronic bullying and more — can eventually become ineffective and actively hold us back when we’re out on our own as independent professionals.

In this episode of The Courageous Entrepreneur Show, you’ll meet my friend and colleague Nancy Philpott.

Nancy is a registered Nurse, a hypnotherapist, and an emotional health strategist and coach. She’s the Chief Transformation Officer for Heart Sync Wellness Center and Founder of the Emotional Resilience Challenge and the Emotional Resilience Academy.

Nancy’s specialty is helping nurses, health professionals, military service members, caregivers, and their family members recognize, prevent, and recover from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Compassion Fatigue, and burnout.

Listen in as Nancy and I discuss…

  • What trauma is and why it can be different for each person
  • How the brain processes trauma
  • How trauma can impact our ability to interact with the world
  • How being a witness to trauma can impact you.
  • Symptoms that could indicate you’ve got unresolved trauma issues that interfere with your goal achievement
  • Suggestions to help you break free and break through.

Aligning faith and work isn’t easy.

When business coach Ed Rush invited me to a workshop he was putting on in San Diego that he called Ultimate Breakthrough that would specifically discuss how to merge faith with growing a business, I knew I had to attend.

It was a great event for many reasons but it really threw me for a loop.

While at that event I realized that there was a calling I was resisting. That event — and specifically Melvin’s message — helped me give in to that call and start this show.

I made sure to connect with him on Facebook and I make sure to watch his daily videos for my “daily dose of Melvin”.

If you’ve ever felt trapped in a pit of unworthiness…knowing you were called for more but afraid to take action, then I hope this episode speaks to you.

My guest grew up in apartheid South Africa as one of six children in a Hindu family. They were incredibly poor living in a tin shack with no running water. But he was greatly influenced by his mother and her belief in Jesus.

She used to tell him that if he ever wanted anything he was to pray to Jesus.

Melvin went from spending $2 to rent an audio tape of the legendary speaker Zig Ziglar to becoming a vice president in the Ziglar organization. Today, he’s a an advisor to CEOs, political leaders, and entrepreneurs looking to take themselves, their countries, and their businesses to new heights of success in a way that’s consistent with their faith.

In this episode of The Courageous Entrepreneur show Melvin reveals…

  • The role faith plays in helping us break free from the chains of trauma
  • How to deal with feelings of unworthiness and embrace the fact that Jesus is our brother
  • How shame can block faith
  • How an abundance mindset fits with being faithful

…and so much more.

There are a million things that need to be done as you grow and run a business. And since we entrepreneurs tend to share certain characteristics like a love of learning, a tendency to be early adopters of technology, and creative idea machines it can be easy to have a million projects in various stages of launching that never get anywhere.

And as the stress and frustration mount it can be easy to frantically try new things, throw new ideas and projects at the wall to make something stick when the answer might in fact be the opposite.

As a productivity coach and host of Crusher™TV, Alan Brown teaches productivity “brain hacks” to crazy-busy professionals and entrepreneurs.

Alan is the #1 Best-Selling author of “Zen and the Art of Productivity: 27 Easy Ways to Have More Time, Earn More Money and Live Happier.”

A featured speaker in the U.S. and Europe, including a TEDx Talk, he uses his weekly online TV show, at CrusherTV.com, to help people live to their potential by “unleashing the power of their brains.”

Listen in and hear Alan reveal…

  • The percentage of the population believed to be undiagnosed with ADHD
  • Why ADHD-ers engage in risky behaviors
  • Things we commonly tell ourselves when we struggle with ADHD
