SHOW NOTES

As I was editing this episode, a saying popped into my head – “all who wander aren’t lost.”

That’s because today’s guest, RL Chance has been on quite a journey. His story is a great inspiration and he shares some excellent tips and strategies to help you recognize that while you might wander at times you’re not really lost either.

Randrick Chance – who goes by Chance – is a US citizen by way of the Caribbean. He’s a Navy veteran who won many awards during his tenure. After a spiritual awakening he left the Navy and transitioned to the nonprofit sector and a career in humanitarian relief. A career that took him to more than 26 countries and 6 continents.

Chance divides his time among his duties as pastor to two churches and his work as an implementation strategist with entrepreneurs. He works with entrepreneurs to monetize their skills including helping them publish their platform building books.

Listen in as Chance shares:

  • Why he says success is predictable and how to make it happen
  • Why failure is also predictable and how that’s likely to occur so you can avoid it
  • The #1 thing that he says will completely sabotage your success

And he gives his insight on the 8 strategic actions all entrepreneurs need to take

As always, listen all the way to the end where I’ll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode.

Show Notes

Those of us in service professions like coaching, consulting, healing, or other professional problem solvers start our businesses because we:

  • Have been given talents that we love to use and want to use all the time
  • Feel called to do the work we do
  • Are on a mission to bring about some change in the world
  • Have likely figured out a solution to a problem and we want to share that solution with the world

But then we realize we have to figure out how to get clients so we can do that thing we love and do so well.

And it’s in that moment that we often come face to face with emotional baggage we never knew we had or baggage we thought we had tucked away in that closet in our mind.

But until we deal with this issue and recognize selling is just helping people make a choice that’s best for them, we’re left to struggle.

Struggling to make sales means we aren’t generating the income we want and need to survive or thrive.

We’re not helping ourselves, our families, or the causes we care about.

We’re stressed. We’re fearful. We can get depressed.

You get the picture.

So we’ve got to not just figure out the whole sales process. We’ve got to get comfortable with it and actually embrace it as part of serving others.

That’s right. It’s part of serving others.

And that’s what we’re going to focus on in today’s episode and why I wanted today’s guest on the show.

Darlene Karpaski, is a National Board Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, a High Performance & Sales Coach seen on ABC, FOX, CBS & NBC News. She helps purpose-driven entrepreneurs Create optimal brain chemistry so they can rapidly grow their sales & income.

Through intuitive communication skills training she empowers professionals to give their prospective clients permission to choose a better life & see how the services offered by the professional are the
answers to the prospective client’s prayers.

Listen in as Darlene and I discuss:

  • Why solo professionals hate selling
  • When you see selling is actually serving you can stop fearing it and start embracing it
  • Why sales scripts often don’t work
  • How to show up powerfully in a sales conversation and not come across as a jerk
  • Balancing the selling the relationship of working with you with the fear of rejection
  • What may be happening when you don’t hear from a prospect after submitting a proposal and what should happen before it gets submitted
  • What’s a flexible offer and why that may infect be a good approach for you to adopt with potential clients
  • The biggest mistake made in the sales conversation
  • Her best tip for scaling a practice and to make sure she’s building a life and not just a business

As always, listen all the way to the end where I’ll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode.

Building a financially abundant coaching, consulting, or other practice centered around our core expertise is a dream for all of us. But how do you do that? How do you make a big impact and a big income where you’re paid top dollar, working with fantastic clients who are committed to doing the work and playing full out?

That’s a pretty big topic with lots of layers to it. And it’s why I’m always fascinated to talk about it with women who have done it and who continue to push themselves to maximize their revenue and the joy in their lives.

Today’s episode is with top executive coach Charmaine McLarie.

Charmaine McClarie, African American Professional woman, speaker, executive coachCharmaine has been running a thriving practice for decades and built it strictly through word of mouth.

She makes no secret of the fact that some people will think she’s expensive but like the commercial says Charmaine has no problem saying “I’m worth it”.

In addition to being an executive coach, Charmaine is a keynote speaker and leadership expert. She works with clients to have their best year ever and 98% of her clients get promoted within 18 months.

She serves on the faculty at the University of Missouri Kansas City Block School of Management’s EMBA program and is a visiting lecturer at Smith College’s Executive Education program. Her company has been featured in Financial Times, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, the NY Times, and People magazine.

Listen in as Charmaine and I discuss:

  • Recognizing, owning, and charging your value
  • Why women in particular often undercharge
  • The question she asks people that completely stumps them
  • The one piece of advice she got when she started that helped her price her services from a place of value and communicate that
  • How she became a great speaker
  • Her Executive Success Principles and the value of having branded content
  • Her tips on marketing, selling, and managing growth and making a big impact while having a life you love

SHOW NOTES

We all talk about wanting to get new clients and wanting to get more clients. But what if we didn’t have to?

What if you actually had clients who stayed with you longer, felt so cherished by you, that they were more likely to recommend you to others?

There’s a study that says a 5% increase in client retention can lead to an increase in profits of between 25 and 95%.

Wow.

Of course you’ve got to deliver a great service. You’ve got to produce a transformation that gets clients excited.

But it also speaks to the relationship you have with clients and how you can help them see and feel how much you genuinely care for them.

That’s what this episode is all about.

Deb Brown is a speaker, author, and consultant who specializes in working with entrepreneurs to develop relationships with their clients and create lifelong profitable relationships with them.

Listen in as Deb explains:

  • The profit in retaining more clients and serving them for a longer time period.
  • How building relationships helps you stand out
  • Her simple 3-part framework that helps you create a custom loyalty strategy that pays off
  • An old-school strategy that still works and probably always will
  • How to leverage your time and create a strategy that works for you
  • Simple, practical and proven strategies that have a great payoff
  • How to repurpose items and add value to your relationship with clients

As always listen all the way to the end where I’ll share your action step and cocktail exercise for this episode.

SHOW NOTES

When we start our business we get all focused on things like our logo and finding the right domain name and getting a website.

We join networking groups and think about what expert title we’ll give ourselves.

But in reality that’s some of the LAST stuff we should be thinking about.

The bigger and more important issues are how are we going to stand out from the see of others who do similar work we do? Who are we going to serve and how will we help them recognize that we CAN serve them and lead them to the transformation they want to experience?

That speaks to differentiating ourselves and communicating that differentiation to the world so we attract the right audience and repel the wrong one.

That’s a massively big topic to cover and I could go on for weeks about it but today’s guest helps break it down for us.

Jan Wallen helps successful people who are feeling stressed, stuck, and held back in their corporate life or job and want to trade that for the life they’ve dreamed of by using her Corporate Freedom Gameplan. This provides them with a strategy that helps them make an effective transition while not sacrificing their current income.

With her up-to-date knowledge and expertise in the areas of lead generation and prospecting, social selling, and networking for clients she’s been a featured contributor in major media like ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox as well as Business Insider and others.

Jan is also a certified SCORE mentor and First VP at Lifetime Learning institute at Bard College.

Listen in as Jan and I discuss:

  • Why differentiating ourselves is so hard to do
  • Why niching is an important part of the differentiating process
  • How to bring your corporate gifts to your new business without bringing the negative crap
  • The difference between a niche and an ideal client
  • The most important elements of an ideal client profile

SHOW NOTES

If you’re listening or watching this show then it’s likely you’ve either started and are growing a business or are dreaming of starting a business based on your skills and expertise.

Often we’ll just hang up our shingle as an expert in what we were doing for our previous employer without spending enough time thinking about our offerings, packaging and pricing offers, or how we’ll even get clients.

In this episode, accountant Maddie Brown explains her stops and starts at starting her firm and how she ultimately chose to buy an existing firm rather than start from scratch.

Maddie was an accountant with the federal government who hated her job and dreamed of going out on her own. Rather than start her own firm, she looked for and found a firm for sale in the geographic area she wanted to be in and made the purchase. She’s since gone on to narrow the firm’s focus and now specializes in helping virtual entrepreneurs (like coaches, consultants, speakers, and other experts) manage their money and financial responsibilities so they keep more of what they earn.

Even if you’re already in business Maddie shares some thoughts that will likely have you nodding your head and show how much she understands what we all go through.

So listen in as Maddie shares:

  • Why she chose to buy a practice rather than start her own
  • The key advisors and resources that helped her make a good decision when purchasing the existing firm
  • How she and her firm’s former owner laid the foundation for a successful transition when she took over
  • Her best marketing strategy for getting new clients
  • Her great advice for letting go of feeling salesy in discussions with potential clients
  • The mistake she feels business owners make as they grow
  • And her tip for creating a great life while you build a great business

As always listen all the way to the end where I’ll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode.

SHOW NOTES

I’m sure you believe you’re optimistic and have an abundance-focused mindset.

You may say affirmations, think positive thoughts, and take responsibility for your thoughts, beliefs, and outcomes.

The standard formula for abundance is Ask, Believe, Receive.

You may “Ask”, and you certainly say you Believe. So why aren’t you receiving?

Have you ever deflected a compliment? You know someone says that shirt looks nice on you and you say “oh this old thing?”

Have you ever gotten a compliment about your work and said “Oh it was nothing. Anyone could have done it.”

Then you want to listen closely and maybe even take some notes because you may very well be putting up blocks to receiving what you want.

You may be what Nat Couropmitree calls a Conditional Receiver.

I know I’m one.

Nat guides visionary leaders to live their lives in a match with the energetic frequency of their truest selves. Tapping into this powerful source of love, respect, and value frees them from the exhausting cycle of working harder to gain something that can never be achieved through more effort, more work, more sacrifice, and instead creates space for them to experience the ease, joy, and adventure in the present moment.

Nat is also the host of the Bold Magnificence podcast where his guests share stories about having the courage to live in alignment with what lights them up.

And what lights Nat up is experimenting with exotic cuisine, finding adventure in far-flung places, and dancing the Argentine tango with his beloved wife Olga.

Listen in as Nat explains:

  • How we cut off the abundance we dream of and deserve
  • The different types of conditional receivers so you can recognize which one you are
  • Strategies to begin to break free from the conditioning you’ve experienced in your life without blaming or shaming yourself or others
  • The ultimate need and goal we all share as humans
  • The one thing we’re all told to do as service-providers that actually sets us up for struggle and even resentment
  • How conditional receiving impacts the strategic actions we must take in growing our businesses
  • And the single practice where everything begins

As always listen all the way to the end where I’ll share your action step and cocktail exercise for this episode.

SHOW NOTES

One of the things we know to be true is that we all want to work with experts. When we’ve got a problem no one sits around wondering who is an average solution provider I can get to solve my problem on the cheap.

Our first thought is I have a problem and need an expert to solve it. We’ll figure out how to pay for it later.

Our own target audience feels the same way.

And in today’s crowded online market place and even in the noisy offline world consumers – whether in the business to business segment or in the direct to consumer or B2C space people are looking for the right expert.

As much as it may be difficult to put ourselves out there, to take a clear stand, to communicate our point of view. But we MUST do it.

Your audience is best served by YOU. Not someone else.

Building your brand as a thought leader is an important part of that process.

To discuss this idea, I’ve invited Samantha Riley on the show.

She’s a speaker, international business growth coach, best-selling author, host of the ‘Thought Leaders Business Lab’ podcast, co-founder of the Global Thought Leaders Network and has 25 years personal experience in building and growing businesses.

Today, she helps thought leaders and experts to scale their business so they have more income, more freedom, and more impact.

Listen in as she shares:

  • What a thought leader is and is not
  • 3 must haves to help you step into greatness
  • The challenges faced by those of us who leave corporate life
  • The problem of comparisonitis and how to deal with and overcome it
  • A fun idea for making sure your statement of what you do is clear and simple
  • 3 keys to being seen as a thought leader
  • How thought leadership helps you get clients

And Samantha’s best tips for managing the 8 strategic actions we need to take to grow our expertise based business.

As always listen all the way to the end where I’ll share your action step and cocktail exercise for this episode.

Show Notes

It’s no secret that social media has taken the world by storm and changed the way we communicate and the way we market our services.

But lots of solo professionals I talk to haven’t seen the sort of return on investment they dreamed of when they first embraced using social media and participating in social networking sites. Others have had decent results but are ready for more.

And to be honest, it’s taken me a long time to begin to reap the benefits.

So I knew the time was right to have a conversation about this with an expert.

We’re going to focus on some big picture concepts and at the end I’ll share some application ideas with you.

My guest today is Leslie Horn Trosset. Since approximately 2000, Leslie has worked to master the art of cutting through the noise and marketing hype to help make millions of dollars for her clients. She takes clients through her powerful and emotional process of discovering where they are now, where they want to be, and uncovering what’s getting in the way of realizing their dreams. The result is a customized marketing strategy that combines content marketing, SEO, and social media strategy that you can implement quickly and begin making more money.

So listen in as Leslie explains:

  • The jargon of social media and social networking
  • How to show up as yourself in social media and what exactly that means
  • Finding a balance in what you share versus over-sharing
  • What to do when you’ve been using a platform for personal stuff and you want to start using it for business
  • How to choose the right platforms to be on
  • Common mistakes entrepreneurs make using social media
  • Why it’s important to share your opinions and perspective in your social posts
  • And what she knows now that she wished she new when first starting her business.

As always listen all the way to the end where I’ll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode.

Show Notes

I have a confession to make.

I hate traditional networking.

You know, those rubber chicken luncheons and dinners where everyone you talk to seems to expect you to buy from them before dessert’s served?

I’m much more comfortable doing my networking online. But even then I’ve had people tell me they wanted to have a get-to-know you chat only to find out they wanted to pitch me their service.

But let’s face it, we know that theoretically networking is the way to get work whether that’s a paying job, a consulting contract, or other work.

And for an introvert, the idea of doing something that allows us to cultivate relationships that lead to business is just what we want.

But it doesn’t seem to work that way does it?

I was thinking about this very topic one day when I was on LinkedIn and an article about the problems with networking caught my eye.

I read the thread of comments and one in particular stood out. It was an honest assessment of the problems with effective networking. The commenter mentioned her book in her response and that led me to reach out and ask her if she’d come on the show to discuss her insights with us.

I was thrilled when she said yes because this information is so important.

Patti DeNucci is a conference and corporate speaker and workshop facilitator as well as the author of the award-winning book The Intentional Networker: Attracting Powerful Relationships, Referrals, and Results in Business.

She grew up in an entrepreneurial family in northern Minnesota and upon moving to Texas, enjoyed a career in marketing communications before launching her own consulting practice in 1989.

Patti has served in leadership positions and earned numerous awards in both the Association of Women in Communications and the National Speakers Association. She founded what is known as Freelance Austin, a networking and professional development group devoted to helping solopreneurs thrive.

Something fun about Patti – she enjoys making jewelry.

“Live, work, and connect at a higher level” is her mantra and it’s what she strives to inspire others to do.

So listen in as Patti shares:

  • What’s wrong and right about traditional networking
  • Why it’s critical to make the right choice of networking groups and her own rating system for evaluating their effectiveness
  • The power and importance of intentions as they relate to networking
  • Some tips for becoming a little more comfortable at an event where you don’t know anyone
  • What to consider when deciding to turn down a meeting request from a contact
  • The simple thing 98% of networkers don’t do and how it can instantly differentiate you
  • And the single most important thing to learn before you start networking. This answer might surprise you.

As always listen all the way to the end where I’ll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode.
